MENTAL SIDE OF BIKING:
TRAININ WITH H. H. DILTHEY

by Paolo Volpara - OMM2009

As creator and director of the Nurburgring challenging course Hans was always in contact with top professional riders, racers and testers: at the end of the course we left our address with a hopeful invitation to Turkey. From then on we developed a personal deep friendship and Hans contributed in many ways to the development of OMM and ARA training program.   read more

From one of OMM Bulletin readers we received an invitation to print this set of three stickers that bikers should place around to stop the insane hunt for speeding bikers that brings so much cash and so little joy to the inhabitants of this land.

We are not so sure about it: after all speeding is illegal and we are good citizens obeying the rules. More than this we are committed to advanced training and intelligent restrain.

But… is training for going smoother, safer and faster? Are we prophets of excess?

Let us know what you think… should we accept or reject the idea of placing OMM under these stickers?

READ AND RIDE
Riding is a Way of Thinking

What is KNOWLEDGE without desire to learn?
by Paolo Volpara (c) OMM 2008

The road to happiness goes through controlling and overcoming fears”.

I was sitting on a boat in one of the bays of Fethiye Gulf, contemplating the misery of sailing, when a simple statement from one of the guests aboard struck my attention.

I stopped dreaming of asphalt and corners and the voice of Aristotle resounded across the centuries “More than anything else – men and women seek happiness.”

And what is your fear? –I asked- and How did you overcome it?”. “I have always been afraid of heights, of looking down from high places, of being suck into the void… so when I was in Africa at the Victoria Falls I decided to take the 111 meters bungee jump to the Zambezi river that, being among the highest jumps in the world, had all the chances to cure the fear”.

The new friend then continued in telling about the experience with a positive conclusion. “Back home in Belgrade I walked to the window on my seventh floor apartment. Usually a simple look down would give me panic and dizziness… now it was simple… could have jump down easily (and die) or safely with a good bungee. Fear was gone

Checking for the famous Northeast Passage (from the Atlantic to the Pacific via North route) the English explorer Richard Chancellor rounded in 1553 a 300 meters high cliff on the extreme Norway and called it North Cape. Little he knew that years later, with the name changed into Nordkapp this point will be an attraction calling more than 200,000 tourists to visit annually, during the two to three months of summer.  Nordkapp is usually referred to as the northernmost point of Europe reachable by vehicles and Guney ERDAL, OMM rider from Ankara, left the “sign on the sign”.

Riding a BMW 1200GS Guney took the “long way around” leaving Turkey via Russia then Finland, Sweden and Norway. After placing a (we hope temporary) OMM and Hitit sticker on the Nordkapp sign he reversed the course south returning to Sweden and then riding home trough Estonia, Lithuania, Leetonia, Poland, Check, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Greece. One More Mile to stick the sticker!

Ride to Work Day:
comments from Vedat Kursun

When my friend Paolo encouraged me about organizing the Turkish event of RTW day I first noticed the need of a Turkish website that would tell Turkish riders the importance of riding to work with a motorbike. The rest came spontaneously. After getting the domain www.issurusu.org (the event is called Iş Günü Sürüşü but www.isgunusurusu.org would be too long and hard to write) and designing a simple web site the second step was to organize a meeting. With little resources and inexperience the first gatherings of RTW day in Turkey were not much crowded. But it’s a start. Even a thousand kilometer journey starts with the first step. With the help of Yiğit Güler, Levent Vardar, Mustafa Hepekiz and Tufan Ilkkutlu (please forgive me if I have forgotten any names we managed to organize meetings in four different locations (both sides of İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir).

With an even more motivated spirit, I am sure that next years organizations will be even more professional and enjoyable. But the really important thing is that we don’t forget our goal. Our aim is to make people ride instead of drive and again make people notice that there are actually people in the city that do happen to ride bikes in the same environment as car drivers.

Thanks again for everyone’s support. Please don’t forget to smile and be happy as you are... Vedat Kursun
